Victory of the Electoral Coalition-AKEL, DIKO (Democratic Party) and EDEK (Socialist Party)-

at the Local and Communal Elections in Cyprus

17.12.06 Local and communal elections were held in Cyprus on Sunday 17th December 2006 with the purpose of electing mayors, local council advisors and school councils for the area under the control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus as well as for the municipalities of the occupied areas.

 

The candidates of the electoral coalition made up of AKEL, DIKO (Democratic Party) and EDEK (Socialist Party) succeeded in winning 5 of the 6 main towns: Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Kerynia.

 

Nicosia, the last divided capital of Europe, saw for the first time, the election of a woman Mayor.  Against a backdrop of fierce competition, Eleni Mavrou member of the Central Committee of AKEL, was elected with 34,93% of the votes, the other three candidates polling 32,7% , 27,37% and 5,58%. Limassol witnessed the election of a member of the Political Bureau and Central Committee of the Party, Andreas Christou with 55.14% of the votes. A third member of the Central Committee, Andreas Moeseous with 52.37%, was elected Mayor of Larnaca.

 

In numerous municipalities the elections proved a success for the Coalition, while certain others were lost for a few votes.

 

A complete evaluation of the electoral results as well as the strength of each Party in the different municipalities will follow shortly.
