AKEL congratulates Sinn Fein of Ireland

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12thFebruary 2020, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL A.Kyprianou sent a congratulatory message yesterday to the President of Sinn Fein of Ireland Mary Lou MacDonald about the Sinn Fein’s victory in the Irish elections. The main part of the letter follows:

“It is with great pleasure that I extend to you warm congratulations on behalf of the Central Committee of AKEL, for Sinn Fein’s historic victory in Sunday’s general elections in Ireland.

This significant result constitutes a landmark in the struggles of your Party for the reunification of Ireland, for social justice and peace in your country. It is even more significant that the result comes at a moment of historical challenges concerning the implementation of Brexit and its aftermath.  We wish you every success in accomplishing the goals you have set for the future.

I take the opportunity to reiterate AKEL’s support to the Good Friday Agreement and the reunification of Ireland. I express our satisfaction for the level of understanding and cooperation developed between our two parties through our work on issues of common interest, and of course also in the framework of GUE/NGL.

I look forward to meeting you in the near future.”
