Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the President of the Republic’s meeting with the President of France
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th July 2020, Nicosia
AKEL will await a comprehensive briefing from the President of the Republic on the results of his meeting with the President of France. France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has taken longstanding positions of principle on the Cyprus problem and our peoples are linked by friendly relations over many years.
We undoubtedly consider the statements expressing support from France towards the Republic of Cyprus against Turkey’s aggressive actions as positive. We also point out the statements regarding the EU’s responsibilities and role as to Erdogan government’s aggressive policy, which of course is directed against other countries of the Eastern Mediterranean as well, besides Cyprus and Greece.
AKEL’s position and assessment is that the declarations of solidarity with Cyprus will acquire substantial content by perusing a policy that – utilizing, among other things, the instrument of sanctions – will pave the way for a just and correct solution to the problems which Turkey is provoking in its relations with Europe.
In AKEL’s opinion, the first priority of the government as regards our country’s foreign policy and the processes on EU-Turkey relations, must be to promote the termination of the Turkish occupation and division of our homeland. The promotion of a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the agreed framework is the primary goal of our people and at the same time its solution can contribute towards de-escalation, stability and peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.
